We watch the NBA because we hope to see those things that have never been seen before. Like four former Finals MVPs in one Finals.

Tony Parker hits the deck after a vicious congratulatory butt pat from James Harden.
One quarter later, Parker stayed on the ground for nearly five minutes after a t-shirt whizzed dangerously close to his head. Spurs mascot The Coyote was assessed a flagrant-one.

An Alternate Opinion on the MVP Race.

Yes, LeBron James is in the midst of a great season and the Heat are doing incredibly well. This shouldn’t shock any one since LeBron James is one of the greatest players in the history of the Association and he plays along with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in a weak conference (If the playoffs were to start today in the Eastern Conference, two teams with below 500 records would make the cut). All of this is expected of LeBron James. There are two things you should always be able to count on: water being wet and LeBron James having a great night. Perhaps, I have a narrow, an extremely narrow perspective on James’ game, but it just felt like what he did with the Cavaliers was more impressive than the Heat. I can’t explain it, but James seems more impressive when he has to lean on the likes of Anderson Varejao and Boobie Gibson in the clutch than Dwyane Wayne and Shane Battier.

When I think of an MVP, I think of a player that not only contributes in terms of stats but also affects the culture of the team. Look at what Tony Parker is doing with the Spurs this season. There’s Chris Paul and his complete overhaul of the Clippers. There’s Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose and Dirk Nowitzk and Lou Williams. If you want to drink the kool aid, you could even throw Jeremy Lin and Ricky Rubio’s names into the MVP race as well.

Look, it’s entirely too early to declare who’s the MVP of this truncated season, but it’s not a one player competition. There’s still a lot of games left.

You think I care what Tony Parker says? You think Tony Parker is gonna coach when he quits? Why would I listen to Tony Parker? … Get your ass out there and play, Tony. Tie the score. But talk about basketball, I don’t need Tony for that.
— Gregg Popovich, on Tony Parker’s claim that the Spurs were no longer contenders. If you’re wondering why Popovich is shopping him, wonder no more.

The foie gras and truffle treatment worked very well. He’s back.
Gregg Popovich, explaining Tony Parker’s miraculously quick return. The Suns may have the league’s best training staff, but the Spurs clearly have the best chef.
