The Orlando Magic have announced today that Stan Van Gundy has been relieved of his coaching duties (their words) and Otis Smith has left as the team’s general manager.
The news isn’t necessarily that surprising since Van Gundy said that Dwight Howard wanted him fired in an early April media session. It’s safe to assume that Magic ownership are trying to keep Howard happy.
It’ll be interesting to see if Van Gundy jumps back into coaching or if he’ll join his brother Jeff in the broadcast booth.

WKMG, an Orlando television station is reporting that Dwight Howard called Magic owner Rich DeVos last Friday to say he won’t play for Stan Van Gundy. Apparently, Howard is still sore about Van Gundy’s decision to tell the media that the center wanted him fired.
Howard is currently out of the line up with a herniated disk in his lower back and is expected to miss the playoffs.
To make matters worse,  a recent Sports Illustrated poll shows that Van Gundy is the coach that players would least like to play for. The problem is that Van Gundy is a good coach and he gets results!
I mean if Dwight Howard has this gigantic fear of replicating Shaquille O’Neal’s career, then he shouldn’t clash with Van Gundy.

Stan Is Tired Of The Bullshit

My favorite part of that video interview is the impeccable timing in which Dwight comes in for the photobomb just as soon as Stan calls him out followed by the awkward tension when Dwight puts his arm around him.

It’s hard to tell if it’s just their camaraderie or if it’s more like a, “watch what you say about me cause I can rip your face in half with one hand” kind of a gesture.

And such is the current state of this Orlando Magic team.

At this point though, I feel for Stan and would rather he leave/get fired so he can coach a better team (Clippers, amirite??) and in his own words, not deal with any more of the bullshit.

I’ve never understood the whole hype with Madison Square Garden. It’s like anything: They’re a very good team with very good players, and so that’s something that gets your juices flowing: because it’s Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. But Madison Square Garden to me? It’s not one of the nicer places in the league. It has some history, but no more so than some others. Look, their last championship was in the ’70s.
— Shots Fired! Stan Van Gundy on facing the Knicks tonight and playing in The Garden. I wonder if his brother Jeff has the same opinions though…

This is the system David Stern and his minions like it. So that’s the system you have. I certainly can’t have an opinion because David Stern, like a lot of leaders we’ve seen in this world lately, don’t really tolerate other people’s opinion or free speech or anything. So I’m not really allowed to have an opinion.

I guess he’s still mad that he can’t rock the mock turtleneck

@Suga_Shane

We all have, but it’s not something I would comment on and tell you who or when or anything else, but yeah, I think we’ve all had that. Usually playoff-type situations… Probably the only time I’ve seen it are in the games that sort of end your year in the playoffs.

Swag Van Gundy and his Posse: Patrick Ewing and Keon Weise
Editor’s Note: I’ve said this before but Magic trainer Keon Weise has the illest cardigan game in the league (shots fired KG!). He’s basically the anti-Stan. Every game he has a different sweater and pulls off the look rather effortlessly. Side sidenote: I see you, Earl Clark! (mark)

anaccumulation:

Stan Van Gundy hates Hedo Turkoglu. I laughed and I laughed and I laughed and… I laughed.

Hedo is helping ignite Orlando’s offense - and it’s killing SVG.
