NBA Playoffs Throwback: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Boston Celtics, 1982 Eastern Conference finals

The defending champion Celtics rematch against the 76ers who they ousted the year before. Dr. Julius Erving and the Sixers finally break through big green. It is amazing how many years during the 80’s the Sixers were eliminated either by Boston or Los Angeles. The Sixers advance by winning game 7 at the old Boston Garden. During the blowout victory Boston fans chant “Beat L.A.!” Philadelphia loses in the NBA Finals in six games to MVP Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The 2012 match-up begins with Game 1 Saturday at 7:30pm EST on TNT

Chicago Bulls coach Tim Thibodeau has said that Joakim Noah will be a game time decision for tonight’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Noah sprained his left ankle in game 3 (Don’t look for the video or any photos; it’s awful. What was even worse the 76ers fans applauding Noah’s injury) and missed game 4 shot some free throws without a brace this morning.
Thibs said that Noah will likely not play, but things can change by game time.
While it sucks to see Noah on the sidelines, you don’t want to see him rush back and potentially run the risk of sustaining another injury or doing further damage to the injury. It’s the playoffs and players sacrifice their bodies and play through the pain to achieve glory.

NBA Playoffs Throwback: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Chicago Bulls, 1991 Eastern Conference semifinals Game 5.

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen combine for 66 points defeating Charles Barkley’s 76ers and ending the series 4-1. Chicago advances to defeat the Detroit Pistons and L.A. Lakers to win their first ever world championship. Along the way, Bulls announcer Johnny “Red” Kerr bestows them with the short-lived nickname Thunder & Lightning.

NBA Haikus - 2011-2012 Season Preview - The Atlantic Division

It’s going to be a short season after an even shorter off-season. We had limited time to track player movement, team development and bring you in depth team analysis, like we did last year. So the bros and bro-ettes at NBAO decided we’ll follow in the footsteps of the NBA and provide you with abbreviated team previews in the best way possible, haikus.

For our first installment of NBA Haikus, we dive into the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division. A division that seems to be heading towards mediocrity, given the aging Celtics, the lack of depth of the Knicks, uncertainty of the Nets and the permanent stench of the Raptors.

Eastern Conference - Atlantic Division:

Boston Celtics:
A bad trade gets worse
Clippers’ pick and Green, useless
Pull the plug, Danny
__________

New Jersey Nets:
Must trade for Dwight
So you can resign Deron
Brooklyn here they come
__________

New York Knicks:
Need a center, bad
Drop point guard for a center
Need a point guard, bad
__________

Philadelphia Sixers:
A calm Doug Collins
Mediocrity lives here
No sun for Philly
__________

Toronto Raptors:
If Dwane Casey can
Make Toronto play defense
Ed Davis will shine
__________

Dwyane Wade tango classes, now in session.

Dwyane and LeBron took turns picking on the rookie., then they picked on the rest of the starters. LeBron by himself had outscored the Sixer’s starters at halftime and ended up matching their total at the end of the game.

Hopefully the Sixers got in a good night of partying down in South Beach because they aren’t going back there this season.

Series previews: #2 Miami Heat vs. #7 Philadelphia 76ers These are opposite cities and these are opposite franchises: - Philadelphia got the #2 pick in the 2010 draft, and immediately decided to go with a youth movement. Miami signed Chris Bosh, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade, and decided to surround them with the oldest players in the NBA. Zydrunas Ilgauskas is old enough to be Spencer Hawes’ father. I think Juwan Howard might actually be Thaddeus Young’s father. - Philadelphia is a city that boos opponents mercilessly - and boos its own players even more severely. Donovan McNabb, Mike Schmidt, Santa Claus, doesn’t matter.  Miami is so cordial and welcoming that they retire uniform numbers of people who never played there, like Michael Jordan. The second number they retired? Dan Marino’s. - Miami is the place that Will Smith lives as millionaire superstar. Philadelphia is the city the Fresh Prince had to flee, after getting into one single fight.
  - Doug Collins is back with the 76ers after announcing games on TNT for years. At this point, you could argue that coaching an NBA team represents a hiatus from his broadcasting career, rather than the other way around. Meanwhile, Erik Spoelstra of the Heat probably *should* start taking broadcasting classes this summer, so he has something to fall back on when Pat Riley steals his job next year.
- The Heat often do a “White Out,” where they ask all of their fans to wear white clothing to create a sea of white in the stands. The Sixers informally do their own “White Out,” where local bigots intimidate minorities into not attending the game.
 - Chris Bosh is an All-Star power forward who’s never won anything, yet got a max contract after some shady free agent machinations. Elton Brand is an All-Star power forward who’s never won anything, yet got a max contract as a free agent after some shady free agent machinations. Why are they opposites? Because Bosh still has two working knees, Brand’s left ACL was replaced by a cheese steak. - Actual basketball analysis: What the 76ers have in their favor is youth, length (but not size), and Andre Iguodala, who can shut down one Miami wing. Unfortunately, the other wing will be guarded by Lou Williams or Jodie Meeks. Even if you can force LeBron to take the last shot instead of Wade, that’s not an advantage if he’s checked by Evan Turner. The Heat are going to lose some games, but unfortunately for Roy Ziegler, they’re not going to lose four of them.
