adidas presents- Dwight Howard: What’s in the Bag?

Pau Gasol (via nbaquotes)
Pau is absolutely right. 1000% spot on. In fact, I’d say that Dwight’s not even as talented in the post as Pau or Andrew. In fact, it’s not even close.
Good call Pau. Scratch that. GREAT call, Pau…
…Now on the other end of the floor, that’s a completely different story.
Mr. Paul, the evidence please: Pau. Andrew.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case.

Let’s talk free throws for a minute.
Last night Dwight Howard set the NBA record for free throw attempts in a game (39), but hitting only 21 of them didn’t really bring him close to breaking the record for free throws made in a made (Chamberlain, 28).
Meanwhile in Milwaukee, the Pistons and Bucks set another free throw record, combining to hit all 41 out of 41 free throws on the night. Greg Monroe, a career 77% charity striper, went 8 for 8, also putting up 32 points and 16 rebounds.
For that, Mark Price applauds you. Mark Price and America applaud you.

ESPN: Dwight Howard to ask Orlando Magic for trade to New Jersey
If Dwight signs with the Nets, he’ll probably be visiting the Kremlin more often with his new pals Mikhail Prokhorov and Jay-Z.
Just a reminder about Dwight Howard:
Everyone’s been clamoring about Chris Paul lately that the media has sort-of stopped talking about the 2nd best player in the NBA, Dwight Howard.
I don’t think they’ve forgotten about him as much as they all know exactly where Dwight’s going to end up.
Sorry, Orlando, the only blue Dwight wants to wear is Forum Blue.
From Dwight Howard’s All-Star Game: Gilbert Arenas through-the-legs dunk off a trampoline. Note how Gil doesn’t seem to give a shit about his knees as he nearly lands on them after dunking.
Highlights from Dwight Howard’s All-Star Game
This was pretty fun to watch if only for Courtney Lee, Brandon Bass, and Matt Barnes actually playing like the NBA was back. It also makes me sad that Courtney Lee sort of faded into obscurity when he could have been huge if Orlando chose to keep him.
Other notable highlights: Gina Marie singing the national anthem, awesome fan who yelled out “WE LOVE YOU PENNY!” during Gina Marie’s singing of the national anthem, Gortat’s Jumpman dunk, Courtney Lee windmill dunk, Penny in those all white Foamposites, and Gilbert Arenas doing a through-the-legs dunk off the trampoline.
What bummed me out a bit though is that if the current NBA season does get cancelled in its entirety, that means Orlando will lose its stake in holding the All-Star game this year and will have to take the next available slot in 2015. A cancelled season also means Dwight Howard is free from his contract and this charity game could possibly be the last game he’s played in Orlando. And if that were the case, Dwight would have ended his career at least on somewhat of a high note: playing alongside his former teammates and friends in front of the city’s most die-hard fans as if he was creating an Orlando Magic Greatest Hits mixtape for himself to look back on one day.
Or it could just be Dwight hosting a fun game for charity with a bunch of players who are equally bored and ready to play any semblance of basketball in front of an audience since there isn’t very much progress on if or when the next NBA season will start.
Just some thoughts to mull over if you are a Magic fan.

I thought Modern Warfare 3 would make me forget all about this silly NBA lockout…
Then they went and stuck Dwight Howard in the commercial.
Thanks, COD. Jerks.
Dwight Howard’s Charity All-Star Game
Good news for Orlando basketball fans! Dwight Howard is hosting a charity basketball game at UCF arena on Sunday, November 13th. The event plans to bring together Orlando Magic players past and present with proceeds going towards “Plant Seeds, Cultivate Them, and Watch them Grow”, which supports youth education, health & activity, character development, and social responsibility around the globe.
Now that’s out of the way, here are the confirmed players for Sunday’s game:
Dwight also invited Shaquille O’Neal, Courtney Lee, and a few others who have not yet confirmed. All in all, this is a pretty dream lineup and would be worth the admission just to see Penny Hardaway and Gilbert Arenas run the floor together. The only way this could get better is if Shaq confirms (potential Shaq and Penny reunion OMG) or if the Fat Shawn Kemp makes a surprise appearance.

Dwight Howard giving the city of Orlando a collective groan.
To Dwyane Wade’s point, what the owners side of labor negotiations perhaps is not acknowledging is that the small market-big market dynamic in the NBA is as much, if not more, about taste than it is money.
This is not baseball where, year to year, big market advantage is predicated almost entirely on payroll. And this is not the NFL where teams, large or small, can build success from compiling and then retooling multiple parts.
In the NBA one or two players can make your franchise, be it L.A. or Oklahoma City. And if they leave your small market it’s not strictly a matter of money. San Antonio and Utah were lucky enough to draft Hall of Fame players who had rural inclinations, not so much interested in Broadway or the beach. Cleveland and Denver were not as lucky.
Of course it is always about money. Then again the Knicks can’t behave like the Yankees. Simply outbid small markets for the services of big name players then write off their mistakes. Thanks to the “Bird exception” you can’t outbid a team for its star. Cleveland offered LeBron his max earning potential for services on the basketball court. But they could not match that offer as it pertains to off the court interests. LeBron took a minor haircut so that he could take his talents to somewhere with more marketability, and maybe even a few more internet bikini models per capita. And only the most strident rollbacks of player rights in this new CBA could hope to address this small market concern.
In the NBA a lot of big stars want to be icons. Call it the “Jordan Effect,” and in its shadow a “Bird exception” is little more than a dying quail.
Dwight Howard dunks on a (fake) giraffe…in Tokyo.
