BAD BOYS: Salley to Dumars to Rodman
I’m obsessed with this pass from Joe Dumars, which isn’t just behind-the-back to avoid falling out of bounds, but also fools Michael Jordan, and has the perfect English to hit Dennis Rodman in stride for the easy dunk.
Dumars wasn’t just saving this basketball. He saw Rodman flash out of the corner of his eye, and looped a perfect pass. You can see him whip around to watch the play.
That, my friends, is a perfect pass.
Brilliant. I had forgotten about this play.
Growing up, I hated these Pistons. But I never hated Joe Dumars. Because I quietly admired Joe Dumars — his precision, his instincts, his balance, his touch with the ball, his toughness. You could probably count on one hand the players from that era who bothered Jordan: Reggie Lewis, Mitch Richmond, Vernon Maxwell, maybe Alvin Robertson, and for sure Joe Dumars.
