The Mavericks took a lot of different approaches to defending LeBron James. They used DeShawn Stevenson, they used Shawn Marion, they sent an extra help defender, they got physical, they played a zone. Perhaps the least successful approach was Dirk Nowitzki’s “jazz hands” defense, where he attempted to distract LeBron’s shot with the power of choreography. LeBron made the basket, and Dirk tore a tendon in his finger while doing the hand jive in front of Chris Bosh.
