ESPN’s documentary series: 30 for 30, featuring thirty sports documentaries that parallel ESPN’s thirty years of existence, and provide an in-depth back-story to some of the most famous sports stories and personalities of the past three decades, aired Without Bias, this week. The film looks at the sad case of Len Bias, a supreme standout forward at the University of Maryland who was projected to be by many, as good as, if not better than, Michael Jordan — but was tragically felled by a cocaine overdose, just hours after being drafted by the Boston Celtics, and becoming the hope for an on-going dynasty. Bias’ demise, soon after, became a high-profiled, weighty political issue that helped usher in the controversial practice of mandatory minimums in drug sentencing, and which swelled the prison populations of America’s jails.
Without Bias re-airs tonight (all times local) on:
ESPN Classic at 10 p.m.
ESPN 2 at 11:30 p.m.
